Job Description Summary
The Penn Medicine Multiple Sclerosis and Related Disorders Center (MSRDC) seeks a highly motivated Research Specialist C/D with a strong immunology background to support our Center's translational research activities. The Research Specialist C/D will primarily support cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and blood-related cellular immunology assays as part of the MSRDC Precision Neuroimmunology platform and investigator-led clinical trials.

Research Specialist C

The Research Specialist C will perform and develop standard operating procedures (SOPs) for immuno-phenotyping of human CSF and peripheral blood (PB) samples as part of the MSRDC's Precision Neuroimmunology program. Responsibilities will include adhering to the MSRDC's established SOPs to isolate human CSF and PB cells for immuno-phenotyping analysis on the MSRDC's LSR Fortessa flow cytometer. The preferred candidate will also store CSF cells, CSF supernatant, PB mononuclear cells, and serum in the MSRDC Precision Neuroimmunology biobank, and will manage the biobank and maintain a detailed log of sample storage in a RedCap database.

Research Specialist D

In addition to the above responsibilities, this individual will develop and execute novel projects to advance the MSRDC's Precision Neuroimmunology platform. These projects include utilizing the MSRDC's 10X Chromium Controller to perform and develop single-cell genomics assays for the analysis of human CSF and PB cells.

Position contingent upon funding.

Qualifications
  • Research Specialist C: Bachelor of Science and 3 to 5 years of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience is required. Bachelor's degree in biological sciences, engineering, chemistry, physics, mathematics, computer sciences, or a related field with previous experience (2 years) in a laboratory setting. The highly desired candidate should possess: excellent interpersonal communication skills, effective problem-solving abilities, and the ability to work in a team environment as well as independently. Attention to detail and strong organizational and time management skills are a must.


  • Research Specialist D: Master's degree and 3-5 years of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience is required. PhD in the biological sciences or adjacent field, with a minimum of 3 years of experience in an immunology research setting preferred. Candidates should have prior experience with flow cytometry data acquisition and analysis, human sample handling, and performing and/or analyzing human single-cell assays. The highly desired candidate should possess: excellent interpersonal communication skills, effective problem-solving abilities, and the ability to work in a team environment as well as independently. Attention to detail and strong organizational and time management skills are a must.
