Nature of Work

A Sr. Professional Research Assistant or Research Associate position is available at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus in the Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences Center for Pharmaceutical Biotechnology. The successful applicant will serve as the overall manager and will be responsible for the research operations of the Center. The Center contains a wide range of analytical instruments employed in characterizing protein and antibody formulations, protein subunit and mRNA vaccines, gene and cell therapies, and other novel biologics. The position involves training, collaborating with, advising, and supervising a range of academic users, including students, postdocs, and faculty. The manager also will be closely working with the pharmaceutical industry on contract projects, and will be responsible for meeting the various deadlines associated with projects. This position will also be involved in the selection and acquisition of new equipment, maintenance of equipment, coordinating with Center users, and working with on-campus core facilities.

Examples of Work Performed (percentage of time)
  • Train, advise, and supervise facility users in instrument operation and experimental planning (30%)
  • Independently and collaboratively perform experiments (40%)
    • This will include execution of the following analytical techniques:
      • Circular Dichroism Spectroscopy (CD)
      • Fluorescence Spectroscopy
      • IR/Raman Spectroscopy
      • Analytical Ultracentrifugation (AUC)
      • Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC)
      • Isothermal Titration Calorimetry (ITC)
      • Surface Plasmon Resonance (SPR)
      • Dynamic Light Scattering (DLS)
      • Microflow Imaging/Flowcam microparticle counters
      • NanoSight nanoparticle tracking particle counter
      • Archimedes micro- and nano-particle counter
      • High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC)
      • Molecular cloning, protein expression and purification
  • Responsible for administrative tasks, such as procurement and invoicing, marketing and communications, and report writing (20%)
  • Management and repair of facility equipment (10%)

Salary Range

The salary range (or hiring range) for this position at the Sr. Professional Research Assistant level has been established at $60,000 - $70,000.

The salary range (or hiring range) for this position at the Research Associate level has been established at $70,000 - $80,000.

The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training.

The above salary range (or hiring range) represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.

Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications

Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.

Sr. Professional Research Assistant:
  • MS in Pharmaceutical Sciences, Biophysics, Biochemistry, or a related field.
  • Proven experience with multiple analytical techniques listed above.

Research Associate:
  • PhD in Pharmaceutical Sciences, Biophysics, Biochemistry, or a related field
  • One (1) experience with multiple analytical techniques listed above.

Preferred Qualifications

Sr. Professional Research Assistant:
  • Previous experience in an academic setting
  • Previous experience in pharmacy or a pharmacy related field
  • One (1) year experience managing research operations

Research Associate:
  • Previous experience in an academic setting
  • Previous experience in Pharmacy or a pharmacy related field
  • Two (2) years experience managing research operations

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Organizational and inter-personal skills essential.
  • Comfort with basic instrument repair and service. Must be able to diagnose problems with the instrumentation (troubleshooting).
  • The candidate must be highly motivated, and capable of working both independently and collaboratively.
  • Eagerness to take the initiative, engage in outreach to potential users, develop scientific strategies; "entrepreneurial."
  • Potential to teach in graduate-level courses.
  • Demonstrated attention to detail and timely accomplishment of tasks.
