School of Science, Engineering and Mathematics
The School of Science, Engineering & Mathematics is devoted to helping students complete the science and math requirements needed to earn their CSN degree or certificate, and includes the Departments of Biological Sciences, Physical Sciences and Mathematics. The Laboratory Support Division provides quality instruction and instruction support for laboratory courses in School of Science, Engineering and Mathematics. Current laboratory courses cover subjects of physics, chemistry, and biology, including courses required by limited-entry programs in Health Sciences.
This position reports to the Laboratory Support Division Manager in the School of Science, Engineering and Mathematics. The position is located at either the West Charleston, North Las Vegas, or Henderson campus. However, some multi-campus travel is required. Position requires preparation and breakdown of equipment and supplies for science laboratory classroom instruction. Responsibilities include working with various equipment, chemicals, and/or biological materials, and the proper handling, storage, and disposal, of equipment, various hazardous and non-hazardous chemicals, and biological materials in accordance with appropriate regulations/procedures. Common tasks include, but are not limited to:
- Set-up and break-down of laboratory materials and equipment necessary for instructional laboratories for classes taught in the School of Science, Engineering, and Mathematics.
- Potential handling live and preserved microbe, plant, and animal specimens.
- Preparing media, chemical solutions, and laboratory equipment.
- Using equipment that may include microscopes, general chemistry laboratory equipment, PCR thermocyclers, electrophoresis and environmental chambers, spectrophotometers, autoclaves, simple electrical circuits, or a basic multimeter.
- Replenishing and maintaining inventory of supplies.
- Maintaining clean, safe laboratory areas.
- Properly handling, storing, and disposing of hazardous materials including biological, chemical and/or electronics waste.
- Coordinating with the supervisor, other Staff Research Associates, Academic Faculty, and the Office of Environmental Health and Safety.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in a science specialization and one year of professional experience in a research laboratory; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience; OR one year of experience as a Staff Research Associate I in Nevada State service.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree and past professional experience in a bioscience specialization.
Weekly Schedule
Monday - Friday, 8:30am - 5:00pm.
Starting Salary
Grade 31, Step 1 - $54,434.16
Per Nevada Administrative Code (NAC 284.170), salaries for initial appointments for classified positions typically begin at Step 1.
