Department Information
Within this setting, the Department of Biology is an aspiring leader in biological research and is committed to expanding its faculty expertise in support of the anticipated expansion of biological and biomedical jobs in Southeast Georgia. The Department provides undergraduate and graduate students with a challenging education that is research-based and technology-oriented, with degrees including the BS and MS in Biology and the PhD in Environmental Science (in collaboration with the Institute for Coastal Plain Science). The new faculty member will support the current programs in Biology and COSM and participate in the development and growth of the new Center for VIDR, by developing externally funded research programs, teaching, and advising both MS and PhD graduate students. The department provides a foundation for life-long learning and appreciation of biological processes and biological diversity through teaching, research, and outreach. Three campuses and a variety of off-campus research facilities offer Biology students and faculty access to state-of-the-art equipment in the department (including a genomics core lab) and the COSM Core Research Lab (CCRL).
Job Summary
Reporting to the Biology department chair, the Director of the Center for VIDR requires experience in and commitment to research, teaching, and service. The workload distribution is 20% teaching, 20% administration and 60% research. A doctoral degree in Biology, Vector Biology, Vector-borne Infectious Diseases or a related field is required. The position includes teaching at the undergraduate and/or graduate level, engaging with students in the Biological and Biomedical Sciences programs, and expanding COSM's and the Biology Department's focus on research in infectious diseases in its faculty expertise. The successful candidate will develop a high impact, externally funded research program in any area of vector-borne infectious diseases, or related fields. The position is a 10-month appointment.
Required Qualifications
Earned PhD in Biology, Vector Biology, Vector-borne Infectious Diseases or a closely related field with at least 18 graduate semester hours in Biology, Vector Biology, or Vector-borne Infectious Diseases
Strong record of research related to vector-borne infectious diseases with substantial publications and presentations in professional venues.
Strong record of external funding as well as strong potential to attract extramural funding commensurate with an R2 institution transitioning to an R1.
College/university teaching experience.
Proven capacity to successfully mentor and develop students and early-career researchers.
Commitment to and evidence of leadership working cooperatively with faculty, students, university administration and the public.
Willingness to engage with institutional student success initiatives.
Commitment to engaging with best practice initiatives in instruction and pedagogy, mentoring, and curriculum design and development.
Demonstrated commitment to advancing a strong and growing research and scholarship agenda and the production of research/creative activities as appropriate to the discipline.
Preferred Qualifications
Minimum of 2-5 years of administrative experience (e.g. chair, assistant chair, graduate director, supervising laboratory group, etc.).
Existing externally funded research in areas of science represented by the Center for Vector-borne Infectious Disease Research and the desire to maintain funding while serving in the Director position.
Experience developing and leading successful partnerships with any or all of the following external partners: peer universities, healthcare organizations, corporations, governmental agencies, community-based organizations, and concerned individuals.
Proposed Salary
Commensurate with experience.
This is an exempt position paid on a monthly basis.
